Squirrels belong to the family of Sciuridae, which includes both small and medium sized rodents. There are more than 200 species of squirrels that can be found in different parts of the world. Squirrels can be found in various continents except Australia and Antarctica. Squirrels tend to live in wooded areas and many of them form burrows in order to spend their winters in a warm environment. Squirrels can communicate with other squirrels via different kinds of vocalization or scent marking. One of the most interesting facts that surround the concept of squirrels is that they forget where they keep their food.

Squirrels plant thousands of new trees each year simply by forgetting where they hid their nuts. They spend most of their life finding food and climbing trees in search of food. However, during this period if they find any nuts they hide it for later use especially in winters when the food available for them is scarce. They tend to forget it mainly because unlike other animals they don’t have a mind map, which can enable them to identify and track the place where they stored their food. Whenever, the squirrels come across an acorn they always shake it in order to determine what is inside. If the acorn has weevils the squirrels will eat it right away, however; if the acorn does not weevils, the squirrels bury it again in order to eat it later. However, that concept eating it later never comes. They forget where they put their acorns.

Several types of research have been conducted in order to determine the truth behind this fact. Research has found out the squirrels are very important for helping the oaks spread and since they store their acorns mainly in the ground, it results in the plantation of oak trees. Squirrels forget their acorns and the place where they were planted hence over a period of time a tree grows there. Squirrels can have a strong influence on the distribution and the range of oak species that are available within a region. Squirrels and oak trees need one another in order to survive.

However, there are other interesting facts as well about a squirrel that can help you smile. Some of them are mentioned below:
